Herring River - Wellfleet
The Herring River, which covers 1,100 acres, is the largest of the nine marshes monitored by APCC. The salt marsh has been altered significantly by a dike put in place in the early 1900's to create arable land and control mosquito populations. However, efforts are currently underway to revive the area’s estuarine ecosystem.
When fully restored, this site, located at Chequesset Neck Road near Wellfleet Harbor, will be the largest salt marsh restoration project in the entire Gulf of Maine. Volunteers are collecting pre-restoration salinity data to be used at baseline numbers in the post-restoration phase of the project.
